Why Stripping Oily Skin Produces More Oil

Abstract

Oily skin isn't solved by stripping it. Dr Alison Jamieson explains the sebum-regulation science behind Biocinamide Serum and the Acne Protocol.

Oily skin is treated, almost universally, as a cleaning problem. Foam more. Exfoliate more. Strip the surface until it stops shining. The logic feels intuitive: oil is on the skin, so remove the oil.

It is also the wrong model, and it produces the opposite of what the person wants.

Stripping triggers more production, not less

Sebum is not surface residue sitting passively on the skin. It is manufactured continuously by the sebaceous glands, and that manufacturing rate is regulated by hormonal and enzymatic signalling, not by how recently the skin was cleansed.

When oily skin is over-cleansed or over-exfoliated, the skin loses lipids it needs to maintain its barrier. The gland reads that loss as a deficit and increases output in response, over the following hours. The shine returns faster, and often heavier, than before. That requires something that acts on the gland itself.

What actually controls the rate of sebum production

Two things determine how much oil a gland produces: the number of active sebaceous glands, and the enzymatic pathway that drives each gland's output. That pathway runs through an enzyme called 5-α reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) at the follicle. DHT is a stronger stimulus to the sebaceous gland than testosterone itself, so wherever 5-α reductase activity is elevated, oil production rises with it — independent of cleansing habits.

This is why sebum regulation is a signalling problem, not a hygiene problem.

The bark extract doing the regulating

Biocinamide Serum, the barrier and blemish-support step across The Protocol, the AM Protocol, and the Acne Protocol, carries an ingredient most people have never heard of: Enantia Chlorantha bark extract, delivered through a Sederma complex called Evermat.

Enantia Chlorantha is African yellow wood, and its bark is rich in compounds called protoberberine alkaloids. Combined with oleanolic acid, the extract works on two fronts: it inhibits 5-α reductase activity at the follicle, and it reduces the number of sebaceous glands that are actively secreting. It is not absorbing oil after the fact. It is acting upstream, on the process that decides how much oil gets made in the first place.

What the published data shows

In a 28-day study of 22 panellists using Evermat, sebum flow was reduced by 29%, and the number of actively secreting glands fell by 49%. Visible skin shine dropped by up to 55%, and pore size was reduced by up to 36%. This is the ingredient supplier's own published clinical data (Sederma, part of Croda), not an independent peer-reviewed trial, and the panel size is modest — worth stating plainly rather than overselling.

Alongside Evermat, Biocinamide Serum carries niacinamide at 8%, which has its own separate evidence base for regulating sebocyte activity and calming inflammation. The two ingredients are not doing the same job: niacinamide supports the skin's barrier and modulates inflammatory response broadly, while Evermat targets the hormonal-enzymatic driver of oil output specifically. Formulating both into one serum is a deliberate pairing, not an accident of the ingredient list.

Where this sits in the Protocol

Biocinamide Serum is not a stand-alone "oily skin fix." It is the barrier step that sits between cleanser and treatment serum in three separate systems: The Protocol, the AM Protocol, and the five-step Acne Protocol (Daily Devotion Cleanser → Transforming Exfoliator, 2–3×/week → Probiotic Masque, 2–3×/week → Biocinamide Serum → Day Cream SPF 15).

For genuinely oily or acne-prone skin, the Acne Protocol pairs sebum regulation with congestion control and microbiome support, rather than asking Biocinamide to do all of that work alone. A single serum can influence the sebum pathway. It cannot compensate for an exfoliation or masque step being skipped, or for a cleanser stripping the barrier the serum is trying to protect. The system, not any one product in it, is what changes the picture.

Common Questions

Does reducing sebum production dry the skin out?
Sebum regulation is not the same as sebum elimination. The goal is bringing an overactive gland back toward a stable output, not removing oil the skin needs to maintain its barrier. Biocinamide Serum is formulated with barrier-supporting ingredients alongside Evermat for this reason.

Can Biocinamide Serum be used if skin isn't oily?
Yes. It sits in The Protocol and the AM Protocol as the barrier step regardless of skin type, because niacinamide and ceramide support are relevant beyond oil control. The sebum-regulating benefit is most relevant for oily or acne-prone skin specifically.

How long before a change in oiliness is noticeable?
The published data behind Evermat measured results at 28 days of consistent use. Skincare that regulates a biological pathway works on that pathway's timeline, not on the timeline of a single application.
