Abstract

SLS strips ceramides within days. The molecular science behind syndet cleansing, and why Aliangé built every protocol on a barrier-respecting first step.

Cleanser gets less attention than serum, and more contact with skin than anything else in a protocol. Applied morning and evening, it adds up to roughly 730 touches a year, more than any active ingredient will ever get. That volume is exactly why the surfactant it is built on matters more than the claims on the bottle.

What a surfactant actually does

A cleanser's job is to lift oil, sunscreen, makeup and environmental residue off the skin's surface using a surfactant: a molecule with one end that binds to oil and one end that binds to water. The most common surfactant in mass-market cleansers is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), used widely because it is inexpensive and foams generously. Foam, however, is a cosmetic property. It has no relationship to how thoroughly a cleanser cleans, or to what it does to the skin underneath the lather.

In controlled testing, SLS-based cleansers have been shown to increase transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by 37% and reduce ceramide content by 22%, in as little as three days of use. Ceramides are not a minor structural detail. They make up roughly half of the lipid matrix that holds the skin barrier together. A cleanser that dissolves them twice a day, every day, works against barrier-supportive skincare faster than most other products can support it.

Why molecular size is the mechanism

The reason SLS is so disruptive comes down to physical size. SLS is a small molecule, around 288 Daltons, small enough to penetrate between the lipid layers of the barrier rather than staying on its surface. Once inside that structure, it dissolves the same ceramides and fatty acids a compromised barrier then has to rebuild from scratch.

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI), the primary surfactant in the Daily Devotion Cleanser, is a coconut-derived molecule of a meaningfully larger size: around 369 Daltons. That difference sounds small on paper. In practice, it separates a molecule that stays at the surface, lifting away oil and debris, from one that tunnels into the barrier and takes ceramides with it on the way out. SCI cleans by the same basic mechanism as SLS. It simply does not go where it is not needed.

Foam was never the signal to trust

Skin that feels tight or “squeaky clean” after cleansing is often read as a sign of thorough cleansing. It is closer to the opposite. That tightness is usually the sensation of a barrier that has just lost lipids it needed. A cleanser can produce a rich, creamy lather using gentler surfactants and still clean thoroughly. Lather volume is a formulation choice, not a measure of efficacy, and the two are worth separating when judging what a cleanser is actually doing to skin.

The rest of the formula is doing supporting work

Removing the wrong surfactant is only half the task. The Daily Devotion Cleanser is built with several ingredients specifically included to support skin during the one moment in any protocol when the barrier is most exposed: mid-cleanse, before anything else has been applied.

Sodium PCA, a natural component of the skin's own Natural Moisturising Factor, is included at a level shown to hold up to 250 times its weight in water, making it a meaningfully more effective humectant than glycerin during the cleansing step itself. Allantoin, a soothing botanical extract, has been associated with promoting cell proliferation and a mild keratolytic effect, supporting renewal rather than simply calming irritation after the fact. Hydrolysed Jojoba Esters round out the formula with a composition close to the skin's own sebum, leaving a light protective film rather than stripping one away.

None of these ingredients change what the product is for. A cleanser removes things from the skin's surface. What changes is what it takes with it, and what, if anything, it leaves behind to support the barrier while it works.

Why this is the first step in every protocol, not an optional one

This is also why cleanser is not a category where formulation shortcuts make sense. A protocol is only as strong as its weakest step, and applied 730 times a year, cleanser has more opportunities than any other product to either support or undermine everything that follows it.

What this means in practice

If a cleanser leaves skin feeling tight, that sensation is data, not a sign of a job well done. The products applied next, whatever their ingredient list, are going onto a barrier that has either just been protected or just been compromised. Over 730 uses a year, that distinction compounds.
