Abstract
Most conversations about Vitamin C and skin begin and end with the word "brightening." It is one of the most widely used — and least well explained — claims in skincare.
So here is the more useful question: what does Vitamin C actually do at the point in your skin where pigmentation is made? And why does the source of that Vitamin C matter?
Dr Alison Jamieson formulates with Kakadu Plum — Terminalia ferdinandiana — in the Jellyfish Peptide X Antioxidant Serum not because it sounds good on a label, but because published research demonstrates that even at very low concentrations, this extract measurably interferes with the cellular machinery that produces excess pigment.
The Enzyme That Runs the Pigment Factory
To understand how any brightening ingredient works, you need to understand tyrosinase.
Tyrosinase is the rate-limiting enzyme in melanin synthesis. It catalyses the first and most critical steps in the biochemical pathway that converts the amino acid tyrosine into melanin — the pigment that gives skin its colour. When tyrosinase activity increases, melanin production increases. When it decreases, melanin output follows.

What the Research Shows
Published research on Kakadu Plum extract has demonstrated that at concentrations as low as 0.1 per cent, it significantly reduced both melanin levels and tyrosinase activity in cell-based models.
That concentration is worth noting. Many active ingredients require concentrations of 2 to 5 per cent before they produce measurable effects on pigmentation pathways. The fact that Kakadu Plum extract shows activity at 0.1 per cent suggests a potency that goes beyond simple Vitamin C delivery — it points to the synergistic effect of the fruit's complete phytochemical profile working together.
The Vitamin C itself (ascorbic acid) acts as a direct tyrosinase inhibitor by chelating copper ions at the enzyme's active site. Without copper, tyrosinase cannot function. But Kakadu Plum delivers this inhibition alongside a matrix of ellagic acid, gallic acid, and flavonoids — each of which contributes its own interference with melanin synthesis through complementary pathways.
Ellagic acid, for example, has been shown to suppress melanogenesis independently of Vitamin C. Gallic acid contributes antioxidant protection that reduces the oxidative stress signals which trigger melanocyte overactivity in the first place. The result is not a single-pathway intervention. It is a multi-point disruption of excess pigment production.
Why Synthetic Vitamin C Falls Short on Pigmentation
The majority of Vitamin C serums on the market use synthetic L-ascorbic acid as their active ingredient. On paper, it is the same molecule. In practice, the difference matters.
L-ascorbic acid requires a pH below 3.5 to penetrate the stratum corneum effectively. At that acidity, it frequently causes irritation — redness, stinging, sensitivity — particularly in skin that is already compromised by sun damage or barrier disruption. For many women over 40 who are dealing with pigmentation concerns, the very ingredient meant to help becomes difficult to tolerate.
More critically, synthetic L-ascorbic acid oxidises rapidly. An oxidised Vitamin C serum is not merely ineffective — oxidised ascorbic acid can generate free radicals, potentially contributing to the very oxidative stress that drives pigmentation in the first place.
Kakadu Plum extract sidesteps both problems. Its natural polyphenol matrix (ellagic acid, gallic acid, flavonoids) acts as an intrinsic stabilisation system that protects the Vitamin C from oxidation within the formulation. And because the Vitamin C exists within this broader botanical context rather than as an isolated acid at aggressive pH levels, it is better tolerated by sensitised skin.
Dr Jamieson selected this approach deliberately. It is a prerequisite for compliance, and compliance is the only path to visible correction.
