Abstract

Chondrus Crispus extract is rich in sulphated polysaccharides, compounds that share a structural resemblance to the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) already present in human skin, the same family of molecules that includes hyaluronic acid. This GAG-mimicking structure is understood to allow the extract to form a biomimetic film on the skin's surface, sometimes described as a "second skin," supporting keratinocyte protection and helping promote lipid biosynthesis in the upper layers of skin.
Practically, that translates to two functions Dr Jamieson looks for in a formulation:
- A humectant effect. The polysaccharide structure binds and holds water at the skin's surface, working alongside, not instead of, hyaluronic acid and sodium PCA in the same formula.
