How Does Vitamin C Actually Work?

Posted by Alison Jamieson on

Vitamin C boosts your skin's collagen production to give you firmer, more plump skin and smooths out fine lines and wrinkles. The antioxidant properties of Vitamin C help fight free radical damage caused by UV radiation. The result is anti-aging action for younger-looking skin!

What causes this damage to my skin?

  1. Ageing

Vitamin C is a normal skin constituent that is found at high levels in both the dermis and epidermis layers of the skin. Ageing, however, causes a decline in vitamin C content in both the epidermis and dermis.

    1. UV Exposure, Pollutants and Chemical Damage

Excessive exposures to UV light or pollutants (e.g. cigarette smoke and ozone) may also lower vitamin C content, primarily in the outer layers of the skin.

    1. Free Radical Damage

Free radicals can damage the skin by trying to grab an extra electron from atoms in the skin. When atoms are taken away from molecules in the skin, it causes damage to our skin's DNA that can speed along skin aging. This is called free radical damage which is a form of oxidative damage, and this can be repaired by the regular application of antioxidants.

How does Vitamin C actually work to repair this damage?

Collagen is the protein fibres that make skin plump and prevent sagging; elastin are also protein fibres that help skin bounce back. Vitamin C serums are acidic, which means they clear away dead cells from the skins surface leaving it brighter and smoother, which in turn speeds up new cell regeneration. Vitamin C is highly acidic and very bitter, so when applied to the skin, the skin is triggered to ‘heal’ itself by accelerating the production of collagen and elastin.

    Tell me more about Collagen…

Collagen is a structural protein that holds cells together, strengthens skin, and gives it elasticity—all of which are important for a healthy, toned complexion. By boosting our skin's ability to make collagen, a Vitamin C serum helps soften existing fine lines and wrinkles—while preventing new ones from forming.
